The basic essentials for communicating with the oscilloscope are a suitably connected cable between the serial port of a PC (RS232) and the serial port of the oscilloscope (RS423) - a standard feature on all current Gould oscilloscopes - and a communication program such as Terminal (Microsoft Windows) or Hyper Terminal (Windows 95). RS423 is also known as RS232C and is entirely compatible with RS232. Users will also need to know the command syntax for the instrument being communicated with. For faster communication use the IEEE-488.2 port of the oscilloscope (providing that it is fitted on the instrument), a suitable IEEE-488.2 card in the PC and the communication software supplied with the card in the PC. LabView and LabWindows drivers are also available for many Gould oscilloscopes.
